Special Conference for The Deaf Muslims In British And Arab Sign Language

Muslim Deaf UK organised a unique conference for the Deaf Muslims, hosted by the Islamic Cultural Centre, on 7th - 8th September, 2014. The conference was attended by over 150 delegates including Deaf lecturers from Qatar and Saudi Arabia. It was the first such event exploring greater international co-operation and partnership for developing services for the Deaf Muslims.

Opening the conference, Dr. Ahmad Dubayan, said that it was a wonderful occasion for the Centre to cater for the Deaf people in their own language. He said that it was a great achievement for the British Muslim community and would help to create awareness about sign language and other special needs within mosques and centres.

Owais Murad, Chairman of Muslim Deaf UK, welcomed the guest speakers from abroad and thanked the participants for making the event a lively exchange of ideas to strengthen Islamic understanding. He thanked Dr. Dubayan for his support for this ground breaking event. He said that the conference was vital in creating awareness about the need for teaching and learning Islam in BSL.

Farooq Murad, Director of the Islamic Foundation and former Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, called it an historic event. He said that Deaf people are as intelligent as any with a lot of contributions to make to our community and society. The only difference is that they have a special language.

Ali Al-Sinnari, Chairman of Qatar Cultural and Social Centre for Deaf, expressed his thanks to both Muslim Deaf UK and the Islamic Cultural Centre for organising the pioneering event and hoped that a greater bond would be created amongst Deaf Muslims across the world. He gave an exciting talk on friendship and character in Islam.

Abdulmumin Al-Sultan, a popular Deaf speaker from Saudi Arabia, spoke about the need to connect to Allah swt directly and depending on Him alone.

Abullah Al-Dhubayb, Chairman of Saudi Deaf Cultural Group, said that he was delighted to attend the event and build important ties for the future development of activities and resources to provide access to Deaf people for the learning of Islam.

Short presentations were also made by Yasser McAndrew, Secretary of Somali Deaf Community, and Khalid Ashraf, Vice-Chairman of MDUK.
