Background to the Course:
This course is intended to present an understanding of islam as an academic discipline and a faith of more than a billion persons. It will also give a historical background of Islam in terms of early Islam in the holy city of Makkah and its later development in the holy city of Madinah. Therefore, the course will also examine the historical and social context shortly before the advent of Islam. More importantly, the course will introduce students to the major and secondary sources of Islam and their content.

The course will be in three main parts. Part one will dwell on the history of Islam in Makkah in terms of the social and political setup of the place before the advent of Islam. Part two will look into what Islam is all about and its main and secondary sources. Finally, the course will examine the development of approaches and methodologies in Islamic law and exegesis.

Aims
The course has several aims but the following are particularly important to highlight:
  • To explore the historical and geographical contexts of Makkah
  • To familiarise students with important Islamic concepts
  • To introduce students to the core/primary and secondary sources in Islam
  • To examine the methodological developments in the study of Islam
  • To explore the development of schools of exegesis (tafsir) and law (fiqh) in Islam and to introduce scholars of Fiqh ( al-fuqaha)
Main learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the following outcomes are expected to be achieved:
  • To differentiate between the periods of Makkah and Madinah
  • To make a distinction between the nature of chapters that were generally revealed in Makkah and those revealed in Madinah
  • To understand some Islamic concepts and their translation into English
  • To master basic principles of transliteration
  • To compare and contrast the development of methodology in Islamic Studies
