ICC's Imam attends Concordia Forum's UK Policy Conference at the Houses of Parliament

ICC's Imam Sh Faid M Said attended the Concordia Forum's UK Policy Conference at the Houses of Parliament, bringing together policymakers, academics, and faith leaders to discuss the theme, "Building Inclusive Policy for a Stronger UK." The event provided a platform for critical discussions on the lived experiences of Muslims in Britain and the broader societal challenges they face.

One of the key highlights was a presentation by Opinium, which shared revealing statistics on the role and impact of Muslims in modern British politics. Discussions surrounding Islamophobia and grooming gangs proved to be particularly pressing, with speakers emphasizing the complexity of these issues. Concerns were raised over the oversimplification and demonization of South Asian men, with many arguing that such narratives are agenda-driven rather than fact-based.

The ongoing debate around defining Islamophobia was also a focal point. The conversation delved into how it relates to other forms of racism, with multiple speakers stressing the need for a more nuanced and inclusive approach.

Dr. Chris Seiple delivered a powerful argument that Islamophobia and antisemitism should be tackled with the same level of urgency and intolerance. His remarks resonated with the audience, offering a fresh perspective on interfaith solidarity in combating discrimination.

Meanwhile, Marion Lalisse identified denial as the biggest challenge in fighting Islamophobia. She strongly condemned the gaslighting that dismisses both personal lived experiences and statistical data demonstrating widespread negative attitudes toward Muslims in Britain and across Europe.

Jude Levermore of the Methodist Church brought attention to the importance of decolonisation, reflecting on how courage and fear are two sides of the same coin.

Adding to the discourse, Rt. Stephen Dodds underscored the crucial role of faith organizations, recognizing their unparalleled reach and influence in shaping public perception and fostering inclusivity.

The conference successfully highlighted the urgent need for informed, evidence-based policymaking that moves beyond divisive rhetoric. As the debate around Islamophobia continues, events like these serve as essential forums for meaningful change and progressive policy development.
