The Questions of Culture

Monday 27th August 2017

The event about the 'Questions of Culture' took place on 27th August 2018 in the library hall of the London Central Mosque Trust and the Islamic Cultural Centre (ICCUK).

Dr Abdullah Alsufyani was the guest speaker of the event. He is a member of Shura Council at Saudi Arabia and Assistant professor of educational philosophy.

He first talked about the definition of culture and when this word entered the Arabic language. He then talked about the common features of cultures; which are:

1) ability to expand.
2) ability to be critiqued.
3) ability to affect and to be affected by other cultures.

He then talked about the cultured person and when can we say this is a cultured person; he listed different theories about this including Gramsci and Edward Saeed theories.

He finally ended up with a question of: are cultures in conflicts or can engage in dialogue.

Dr Ahmad Al-Dubayan, Director General, ICCUK shared his point of view on the subject and thanked the speaker and all the participants for joining.
