A New Artof Illumination (Tezhip) 8 Week Course



London Central Mosque Trust & The Islamic Cultural Centre is delighted to announce its first Art of Illumination Course starting on July 18th 2022. This course is organised and run in collaboration with Yunus Emre Institute London.

Course Title: ART OF ILLUMINATION (Tezhip) FOR ALL LEVELS

The course will be delivered by the renowned Illumination artist and instructor Nagihan Seymour.

Start Date: Mondays, 18 July - 5 August 2022

Duration: 8 weeks Course. Day and time: Tuesdays from 6.00pm – 8:30pm.

Cost: £280 (Includes most materials)

Class Size: Min. 5 – Max. 20 Students

  • The London central Mosque cannot accept any responsibility for unforeseen changes in students' circumstances that may prevent their attendance for all or part of a course.
  • No refunds can be given for classes not attended.
  • Fees are not refundable once you have attended the first lesson.
  • Please note that, in the event whereby a class has to be cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control, such as adverse weather conditions, the replacement class may have to take place on a different day.
  • Classes will be small in size in order to maintain a high standard of teaching.
  • Certificates will be given upon completion of the full course.
  • Places cannot be reserved in advance without payment.

This FACE-to-FACE 8-week course will cover Ottoman tradition ‘Tezhip’ patterns by artist Nagihan Seymour.

Art of Illumination/ Tezhip, which means ornamenting with gold, is a traditional artform originally used for decorating precious books and manuscripts.

This interactive course will start with an overview of the history and origins of the art.

Attendees will learn step by step traditional stylized floral motifs (hatai, gonca, penc etc) and fundamentals of how to design an illuminated “Shamsa” composition which means “sunburst”.

Then, they will finish their work using traditional painting, outlining and illumination brush techniques including Classical Tezhip and Halkar painting styles. Attendees will receive hand-outs, weekly homework, and feedbacks throughout the duration of the course to track improvement.

Required Materials (All other materials will be provided by the Central Mosque) : Mechanical Pencil 0.5, Eraser, 000 and 0 Paint Brush (Recommended brushes Winsor & Newton 7 Series OR Cotman )
